Almost Human TIFF - H 2013
TIFFIFC Midnight has picked up North American rights to Almost Human, the sci-fi slasher movie that premiered in the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness sidebar.
The low-budget movie is the debut feature of Joe Begos, who a few years ago worked at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood and managed a local stage production of The Re-Animator (based on Stuart Gordon’s 1980s cult classic horror movie) before deciding to take the camera into his own hands.
Begos maxed out credit cards in order to tell the story of a man (played by Graham Skipper, whom Begos met while working on Re-Animator) who witnesses his best friend being abducted by a UFO. When a series of murders hits the small town, the man is convinced his friend has returned.
Begos did plenty on his own: He directed, wrote, produced and acted as cinematographer. His longtime friend Josh Ethier also produced, acted as editor and sound designer and was one of the three lead stars.
The movie provided Midnight Madness with its “Oh, my God, I can’t believe they did that!” moment thanks to one sequence.
Vanessa Leigh also stars in the flick, which was produced by Begos and Ethier of Channel 83 Films and Anthony Ambrosino of Ambrosino/Delmenico Films.
The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, senior vp acquisitions & productions, and Sean Berney, manager of acquisitions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with ICM Partners and Caliber Media on behalf of the filmmakers. WTF Films is handling international rights.
