Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Chinese director Feng Xiaogang’s I Am Not Madame Bovary, toplined by X-Men: Days of Future Past star Fan Bingbing.
The drama, which also stars Guo Tao and Da Peng, is set for a theatrical release in the U.S. on Oct. 7, after a wide release in China on Sept. 30. The deal for the film, which reteams the superstar Chinese director, Bingbing and screenwriter Liu Zhenyun after their 2003 comedy Cell Phone, following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
I Am Not Madame Bovary tells the satirical story of Li Xuelian (Bingbing), a village woman accused of being an adulterer. After a ruling is made against her in her divorce case, she begins an annual “journey of petition” to Beijing in order to prove that her divorce was a sham and to redeem her reputation.
?“I Am Not Madame Bovary is a powerful and innovative film starring one of China’s most acclaimed actresses under the direction of a true master,” Well Go USA Entertainment president and CEO Doris Pfardrescher said Sunday in a statement. The film was produced by Sparkle Roll Media Corporation, Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, Beijing Skywheel Entertainment, Huayi Brothers Pictures and Zhejiang Dongyang Mayla Media, with Qi Jianhong, Wang Zhongjun, Song Ge, Wang Zhonglei and Feng Xiaigang sharing producer credits.
The deal was negotiated by Well Go USA’s Pfardrescher and Golden Network’s Clarence Tang, who is handling Asian sales, along with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch is handling European sales.
