Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. all-star team-up of DC supervillains, was the most watched movie trailer for the week ending Aug. 3 according to marketing firm Zefr, which tracks the numbers.
The movie, which stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne and many others and is set to open Aug. 5, 2016, notched 5.5 million Internet views for a cumulative total of 66.7 million views. Warner Bros. has shown a deft hand in handling the long rollout for this movie, as well as for Batman v. Superman, which recorded 3.3 million views (51.8 million cumulative) to finish in the No. 4 spot. The Ben Affleck–Henry Cavill starrer opens March 25, 2016.
The real surprise of the week was the first trailer for 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which notched 3.6 million views to land in the No. 2. spot. The Michael Bay-directed film, starring Pablo Schreiber and John Krasinski, about the death of the American ambassador in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012 arrives in theaters this January. Adult-oriented movies like this typically don’t open with the same numbers as young-adult-oriented superhero stuff (50-somethings aren’t watching a trailer multiple times like the Star Wars and Marvel geeks), so, in that context, the 3.6 million is a very healthy opening that augurs well for the movie.
Two other trailers debuted in the top 10. Zoolander 2’s teaser arrived at No. 8 with 2.4 million views, and Black Mass is at No. 9 with 2.4 million views. Black Mass, which opens on Sept. 18, is another adult movie, like 13 Hours, and the 2.4 million opening for its third trailer is a solid start.
