For next year’s Transformers: The Last Knight, Megatron is back with a whole new look — and an almost laudable ambition, if only it weren’t for the method he intends to use.
A brief fact file released via the official Transformers Twitter account offered a glimpse at the new design for the Decepticon leader — one that looks far more like historical armor than movie audiences might expect, complete with two new weapons — a sword with an ax head, and (to the almost certain glee of fans of the character’s original design) an arm-mounted cannon.

The image also reveals Megatron’s height — he’s apparently 30 feet tall, if you’re curious — and the most tenuous definitions of “history” and “personality” yet. His history is defined as “ruthless Decepticon oppressor,” which, while true, feels more like a personality type than an actual history, while his personalty is described as “peace through tyranny,” which sounds more like a motto than a personality description.
It is, however, a nod to a fan-favorite Transformers comic book run: The 2008 Transformers: All Hail Megatron comic book series from IDW Publishing, which lasted 16 issues, saw the Decepticons having finally conquered Earth. With the Autobots vanquished (and scattered across the galaxy) and humanity cowed into submission, he had indeed achieved peace in an admittedly skewed sense … Is there a clue about the direction of The Last Knight to be found in that series, perhaps? After all, an earlier tweet profiling another Decepticon did reference the phrase “hail Megatron“…
Transformers: The Last Knight will be released June 23, 2017.
