UPDATED: A lackluster weekend on the foreign language theatrical circuit saw Disney’s Tron: Legacy upend the weekend’s previously declared No. 1 box office winner — Sony’s high-budget The Green Hornet — by less than $900,000.
Revised overseas gross figures released Tuesday (all six major studios were shuttered for the Martin Luther King Day holiday Monday) by Disney and Sony put Legacy‘s take at $15.9 million drawn from 5,806 venues in 47 markets versus Hornet‘s weekend tally of $15.084 million emanating from 2,963 situations in 35 territories.
Hornet, in fact, ranked third in the weekend’s international box office pecking order since Disney Animation’s Tangled, the No. 1 champ in the previous round, narrowly took the No. 2 spot this time by grossing $15.1 million from 4,152 situations in 34 territories.
A 3D special effects-laden feature — reportedly produced on a budget exceeding $125 million, and based loosely on the popular radio series about a masked vigilante and his sidekick Kato — Hornet took the No. 1 box offiec spot in at least seven markets. Germany was the biggest with $4.1 million drawn from 605 spots. In the U.K. the Seth Rogen vehicle (he co-produced, co-scripted and is the star) finished No. 2 with $2.9 million grossed from 486 venues.
Hornet also opened No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada and has accumulated a worldwide box office of $55.2 million.
Legacy premiered in China stronger than anticipated Sunday or a whopping $9.2 million opening gross, said Disney.
Overall weekend take for the 3D sequel to 1982’s Tron was the lowest NO. 1 weekend gross overseas since Oct. 3 when Sony’s Resident Evil: Afterlife claimed the top spot with $15.6 million. With about 45% of the foreign circuit yet to play, Legacy has accumulated $168.5 million so far.
Tangled has rolled up foreign box office of $212 million so far. The 3D animation retelling of the classic Rapunzel tale remained gangbusters in Latin America — except in Mexico, where it ranked only 10th on the weekend — and now qualifies as Disney’s 19th animation title to surpass the $200 million mark in overseas box office.
Universal introduced director Ron Howard‘s comedy The Dilemma, costarring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, in four offshore markets (Australia, New Zealand, Romania and Japan) for an estimated $1.8 million drawn from 303 situations – for a $5,941 per-screen average.
The take from Australia’s bow ($1.5 million from 208 locations) was suppressed by flooding in Queensland and Victoria. Dilemma, which opened No. 2 domestically, debuts in six markets this week including the U.K.
Paramount’s Little Fockers finished No. 4 on the weekend with $14.2 million elicited from 5,104 locations in 52 markets, pushing the overseas cume for the third title in the Meet The Parents comedy franchise to $133.5 million. A No. 2 Italy opening generated $3.3 million from 340 situations.
Finishing fifth was The Tourist, which Sony and other distributors have in release at 4,210 screens in 68 markets. Weekend take is an estimated $13.9 million from all distributors, pushing the overseas gross total for the romantic thriller co-starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie to $122.1 million.
The 20th Century Fox film Gulliver’s Travels broke the $100-million-gross barrier overseas (cume stands at $100.5 million) thanks to am $11.7 million weekend from 4,587 screens in 43 markets. The Jack Black 3D vehicle opened in Brazil to $2.2 million drawn from 452 spots.
Holding Italy’s No. 1 slot for the second consecutive weekend was Medusa Film’s Ma che bella giornata (But What a Beautiful Day), a comedy starring Checco Zalone, which amassed $10.8 million from at least 798 locations for a market cume so far of $42 million.
No. 1 in the U.K. remains The Weinstein Co.’s coproduction The King’s Speech, starring Golden Globe winner Colin Firth, which enunciated its way via Momentum to an estimated $6.8 million from 428 locations.
Weekend overall bagged $9.4 million from 655 screens in four markets (including Greece and Spain) fro an early foreign cume of $33.2 million. Paramount is handling the film in Australia where the weekend take was $1.8 million from 113 sites for a market cume of $11.9 million.
Fox’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader claimed $9.2 million on the weekend from 5,600 screens in 66 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to $259.1 million.
Openings in eight markets – led by a No. 2 Germany bow; $1.8 million generated from 350 situations – pushed the weekend tally of Love and Other Drugs to $8.95 million overall from a total of 2,257 screens in 27 markets. Cume for the romantic comedy comes in at $34.3 million.
DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind, released by Paramount, pushed its foreign gross total to $158.6 million due to a $7.1 million weekend from 3,601 venues in 47 territories. The 3D animation opened No. 1 in South Korea via C.J. Entertainment, garnering $3 million from 592 situations.
Warner Bros.’ animation title Yogi Bear collected $6.1 million on the weekend from 1,700 screens in a dozen overseas markets, pushing its cume to $14.4 million. Same distributor’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I drew $4.2 million from some 3,205 screens in 54 territories. The seventh Harry Potter title, with an estimated cume of $647 million, is poised to become the second highest foreign grosser of the most profitable franchise in movie history. (Offshore cume for the first Harry Potter is still tops with $657 million).
An Australia bow ($1.9 million from 204 locations) helped Sony’s Burlesque generate a weekend total of $4.9 million from 1,221 screens in 28 markets pushing the offshore gross total of the musical drama co-starring Cher and Christina Aguilera to $24.66 million.
Fox’s Unstoppable, the runaway train vehicle starring Denzel Washington, came up with $4.38 million from 1,505 screens in 13 territories for an overseas cume of $76.9 million. Director Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter grossed $4.1 million from 1,100 screens in 20 markets. The Warner’s release has rolled up an early foreign cume of $13.8 million.
Paramount’s Morning Glory, a romantic comedy co-starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton, opened in eight territories, and drew $3.9 million on the weekend overall from 1,419 sites in 12 markets. Cume so far stands at $7.3 million.
Fox opened in the U.K. Conviction, starring Hilary Swank as single working mother who puts herself through law school in order to defend her brother convicted of murder. No. 12 bow generated $430,913 from 254 locales. Overseas cume is modestly more, $471,630 from two markets.
The weekend’s No. 3 title in the U.K. was Warner Bros.’ release of 127 Hours, directed by Danny Boyle and starring James Franco as a mountain climber trapped under a boulder. The Pathe-Handmade Films-Films 4 co-production landed $2.1 million from 343 locations, for a market cume of $6.9 million.
Seizing the top spot in Japan and pushing its foreign gross total to $108.1 million was Sony’s The Social Network, which collected $1.97 million from 329 Japan locations. Weekend overall drew $2.3 million from 689 screens in 30 markets.
Grabbing the No. 1 spot in France was Relativity Media/Atlas Ent.’s Season of the Witch, costarring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, which was released in the market by Metropolitan Filmexport. Debut round at 325 spots landed an estimated $2.75 million.
Top grossing local language title in France was Le Fils a Jo, a rugby-themed comedy directed and scripted by former rugby star Philippe Guillard. The Gaumont release opened No. 2 in the market with an estimated $2.4 million from 450 situations.
Ranking No. 4 in France was Mar’s Distribution’s La chance de ma vie (The Chance of My Life), a comedy about a romantically befuddled marriage counselor. Second round at 357 sites drew an estimated $1.58 million for a market cume of $4.9 million. No. 5 was Disney’s pickup of Japanese animation/fantasy title from Studio Ghibli Kari-gurashi no Arietti (The Borrowers), which drew an estimated $1.4 million from some 205 locations.
Other international cumes: DreamWorks/Paramount’s Shrek Forever in 3D, $511.2 million; Universal’s Devil, $24.9 million (thanks to a $1.1 million weekend at 278 sites in11 markets); Toho’s Battleship Yamato, $46 million over seven rounds in Japan only; Lionsgate’s Saw 3D, estimated$85 million; Universal’s Last Night, $708,000 from 199 locations in Russia only; Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2, $86.4 million; and Lionsgate’s The Next Three Days, estimated $22 million.
