We might be almost a year past the point of alien invasion, but Chris Carter is still hopeful that we’ll get to see a third X-Files movie, which — perhaps by necessity, considering that whole alien invasion thing — will be more mythology heavy than 2008’s X-Files: I Want To Believe.
Talking to Empire Magazine, Carter admitted that “it’s really up to 20th Century Fox” whether we’ll ever see a third installment in the movie series that spun out of the popular 1990s TV show, but he added that “all of us are interested in putting the band back together, [and] I have an idea for a third movie in my head.”

“The colonization date has passed, and that is something we wouldn’t ignore,” he added. “For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.” There’s already a place where that is happening — IDW Publishing put out a monthly X-Files comic that is an official part of canon, according to Carter — but there’s something about a possible third movie that no comic could offer.
“Gillian [Anderson] worked with Simon Pegg on a movie and told me he was a big fan,” Carter said. “We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way.” Mulder, Scully and Simon Pegg? Yes, suddenly a third X-Files seems like a very good idea indeed.
