ROME — Film director Paolo Virzi will stay on to head a second edition of the Turin Film Festival as artistic director, he said Thursday.
Virzi is the third consecutive film director to head the 31-year-old Turin festival, following Nanni Moretti and Gianni Amelio. But despite a successful freshman edition of the event — ticket sales rose for the second consecutive year and review of the event were mostly positive — it was not clear until Thursday whether Virzi would stay around for a second term.

Virzi, a David di Donatello winner as a director, announced his plans via Twitter, where he used the hash tag #nonabbandonoTorino — Italian for “I won’t abandon Turin.” The festival previously said it wanted him back and had been waiting on his decision.
Turin has clashed with the eight-year-old Rome Film Festival the last two years, due in part to the short gap between the two events that Turin organizers say make it more difficult for Turin to attract sponsors and media attention. The situation will apparently be repeated in 2014.
