The Commercial Appeal/LandovLONDON – Amy Berg’s documentary West of Memphis, produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, will be rolled out into U.K. theaters ahead of its U.S. release.
The documentary, written and directed by Berg, will open in the U.K. and Ireland on Dec. 21 this year courtesy of Sony Pictures Releasing.
The movie is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters four days later on Dec. 25 via Sony Pictures Classics.
The movie details the untold story behind a fight to stop the State of Arkansas from killing an innocent man and freeing of others wrongly convicted of murder when still teenagers.
The film chronicles the new investigation surrounding the West Memphis Three that eventually broke the case open and led to the freeing of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr.
The trio was convicted in 1994 of the 1993 murders of three boys in the town of West Memphis, Ark.
The controversial Arkansas legal case garnered widespread media attention over the years, and spawned three acclaimed HBO documentaries.
The documentary is produced by Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with Jackson and Walsh.
