Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant roared to an impressive $7.9 million debut at the U.K. box office, buoyed by a bevy of Oscar and BAFTA nominations, in addition to Golden Globe wins.
The movie bumped Star Wars: The Force Awakens to the No. 2 spot after topping the chart for a month and shattering numerous records. Dropping 48 percent in its fifth weekend, The Force Awakens added a respectable $4.4 million to bring its total to $168.6 million, the best showing of all time in the U.K.
The Revenant landed an impressive $7.8 million in its opening weekend (11 percent higher than The Wolf of Wall Street), and soon looks likely to overtake Birdman‘s final tally of $8.7 million to be named Inarritu’s best film to date in the U.K.
Creed launched at No. 3 with a solid $3.2 million, lower than the initial bow for Rocky Balboa, which earned $5.2 million in 2007.
Daddy’s Home continued its fine run into a fourth weekend, with another $2.1 million bringing its cume to $20.1 million and claiming the fourth spot ahead of The Hateful Eight. After an excellent opening, Tarantino’s eighth film fell more than 60 percent in its second week to $1.5 million. Its cume now stands at $7.4 million.
The sixth spot saw local boy Eddie Redmayne come head-to-head with another double Oscar nominee, Brie Larson. Despite being considered a slimmer Academy prospect, The Danish Girl eventually triumphed, posting third-weekend earnings of $970,000 (bringing its total to $7.8 million), just higher than Room‘s debut of $960,000.
