Universal is reaching back to a cult classic for its theme parks’ Halloween Horror Nights.
The annual event will feature a maze themed on An American Werewolf in London, John Landis‘s 1981 cult favorite, only at at Universal Studios Hollywood. It will not appear at the Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights.
Visitors will enter at the Slaughtered Lamb, the English countryside pub where the film begins, and continue to the fog-shrouded moors where the werewolf attack occurs. The maze’s scenes will include the London Underground, an encounter with demon soldiers and the werewolf transformation for which Rick Baker won the first Academy Award for best makeup.
“The team at Universal Studios Hollywood has gone to great lengths to recreate the mood and details of the movie,” Landis said in a statement. “I want [visitors] to really absorb the elaborate sets, makeup and special effects custom-designed for this experience.”
“John Landis’ iconic horror film and the groundbreaking makeup effects by Academy Award winner Rick Baker have influenced generations of horror filmmakers and fans,” Halloween Horror Nights executive producer John Murdy added in the statement. “Turning such a celebrated film, which has been characterized as one of the greatest films of all time, into a ‘living horror movie’ can be daunting. As the movie studio that invented the horror film genre, we have the expertise to deliver a realistically compelling experience and are up to the challenge.”
This year, Halloween Horror Nights will include mazes themed on The Walking Dead (a third-time returner to the event), Syfy’s Face Off, Robert Rodriguez‘s vampire saga From Dusk Till Dawn, the upcoming origin story film Dracula Untold and the sci-fi/horror series AVP: Alien vs. Predator. It will also feature an open-area “scarezone” based on The Purge.
Those attractions will appear at both parks. More mazes and scarezones specific to each park have yet to be announced.
Halloween Horror Nights will run on select nights starting Sept. 19.
