Universal is moving forward with its latest monsters universe film The Wolf Man, hiring Dave Callaham to rewrite the script.
The studio is launching its monsters universe, a series of interconnected monster films based on its vault of classic movies, with The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, it is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017. Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein are among the classic creatures that will be included in the new universe, overseen by Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious).
Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski wrote the first draft of The Wolf Man, which is being produced by Kurtzman and Morgan. The Wolf Man was a 1941 Universal film directed by George Waggner that starred Lon Chaney Jr. as a man who returns to his homeland where he is attacked and becomes a werewolf.
Executive vp Jon Mone and vp Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal.
Callaham has writing credits on The Expendables and Expendables 2, and also worked on Warner Bros.’ Godzilla. He also wrote the script for the upcoming Jackpot, to be directed by Will Cluck and starring Mila Kunis and Bryan Cranston. This year Callaham created the show Jean-Claude Van Johnson for Amazon that Peter Atencio directed and stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, which was recently picked up to series. He also sold the pitch Another Mother to New Line, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star.
Callaham is repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone.
