Venice: Tom Ford Discusses Fashion vs. Film Following Silver Lion Win for ‘Nocturnal Animals’

Fashion mogul Tom Ford has helmed two features in his budding film career, both of which have premiered in Venice and gone on to win big festival prizes. 

In his first film, A Single Man, Colin Firth won the Coppa Volpi for best actor, and went on to be nominated for an Academy Award. Ford also won the Queer Lion that year.

This year, Ford’s second feature, Nocturnal Animals, won the Silver Lion grand jury prize at the festival. The thriller stars Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon and Isla Fisher.

Despite the incredible success Ford has had with just two films, he isn’t about to take that for granted. “I don’t think making movies is easy for anyone. I think it’s hard. It’s lots of fun, though,” he said during a press conference after the ceremony. 

Ford denied finding cinema easier than fashion. “When I said that fashion was the hardest industry in the world, what I meant was we have to be creative on a calendar constantly, constantly, constantly, so maybe I was just in a particularly exhausted mood that day from fittings,” he said, explaining recent comments he made during New York Fashion Week. 

“I think every industry at a certain level is incredibly hard and incredibly competitive and very difficult to realize your dreams,” Ford added. Although he wouldn’t go in to particulars, Ford told the press afterward that he is already working on ideas for his next films.
