Veteran producer Jillian Apfelbaum is joining Village Roadshow Entertainment Group as executive vp content, responsible for developing both film projects and growing the company’s television and digital business.
Her arrival marks Steve Mosko’s first major hire since being named CEO of VREG in late October. Apfelbaum will report to Bruce Berman, the longtime chairman-CEO of subsidiary Village Roadshow Pictures.
Apfelbaum joins Village Roadshow from Imperative Entertainment, where she was head of film and managed a slate of movie and TV projects, including Clint Eastwood’s The Mule, which is set open Dec. 14. She also was the on-set producer for the Mandy Kaling-penned Late Night, which stars Emma Thompson and will premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Other film projects include Killers of the Flower Moon, Tangerine and the documentary Out of Omaha.
Prior to Imperative, Apfelbaum ran Ars Nova, a New York City-based production company dedicated to fostering comedy projects from emerging playwrights. She also was an executive producer on Freestyle Love Supreme, an improvised hip-hop series for Pivot starring Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Thomas Kail.
“Jillian’s appointment as a senior ‘content’ executive marks a new chapter for VREG to tell stories and engage audiences beyond films and into the television arena and related platforms,” Mosko said Thursday in a statement. “We are looking for great ideas and will work with the creative community to figure out the best medium to tell each story, hence the flexibility that Jillian will have in her day-to-day activities.”
Last month’s appointment of Mosko to CEO bolsters VREG’s goal of increasing its development and production of content with a further emphasis on television, streaming and other emerging distribution platforms as a complement to its business of developing and co-financing feature films.
