Whitney Sundance Doc Poster - P 2014
TORONTO – Indie distributor VSC has picked up the Canadian rights to Whitey: The United States of America v. James J. Bulger, Joe Berlinger’s documentary about Boston gangster Whitey Bulger.
VSC has acquired the theatrical, VOD and digital rights to the documentary that bowed at Sundance, and will screen at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto in late April, with Berlinger attending.
VSC nabbed the film about the long-time Boston crime lord as part of an output deal with Magnolia Pictures, which this week picked up the U.S. rights via a deal with Cinetic Media.
The Canadian distributor will open Whitey: The United States of America v. James J. Bulger in local theaters this summer, ahead of a DVD/Blu-Ray release.
Magnolia plans a day-and-date theatrical and on-demand release in June, followed by a broadcast on CNN later in the year.
