Jaime Rogozinski, founder of the Reddit r/wallstreetbets investor forum that sparked a recent Wall Street stock frenzy by ragtag traders, has along with Joel Rogozinski sold their life story rights to Brett Ratner and RatPac Entertainment.
RatPac also acquired the rights to Jaime Rogozinski’s recent book, WallStreetBets: How Boomers Made the World Biggest Casino for Millennials. A movie is in the works, with Ratner to produce.
Michael Smith Liss and Ignacio Figueras, who brought the project to RatPac, will executive produce, and Kasia Nabialczyk will oversee production for Ratner as an executive producer. The Wall Street Journal first reported the sale.
The recent retail market chaos around shares in GameStop Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings prompted a flurry of interest by Hollywood producers in Rogozinski’s story. Having long moderated the r/wallstreetbets forum, Rogozinski is expected to offer the RatPac producers a treasure trove of information and documentation around the recent market turmoil.
The race to the screen to recount the stock market chaos includes rival projects after MGM acquired Ben Mezrich’s book proposal The Antisocial Network, while Netflix is mounting a competing film from writer Mark Boal, with Noah Centineo attached to star.
In late January, members of Reddit’s r/wallstreetbets forum saw hedge funds had taken short positions on GameStop, AMC Entertainment and other companies, with the expectation those stocks would fall in price. Attempting a short squeeze, the retail traders bought heavily into the company stocks and drove up the prices, forcing steep losses onto the hedge funds.
In Nov. 2017, six women accused Ratner of sexual harassment or misconduct, including actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge, The Los Angeles Times reported. Warner Bros., which had worked with the producer, severed ties with Ratner on the same day that the Times story broke. Ratner has denied the sexual misconduct claims.
