By the start of the new War for the Planet of the Apes movie, the conflict between man and ape that started at the end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been underway for long enough that both sides are beginning to feel some major losses. But a new comic book prequel to the upcoming movie will fill in the parts of the story that movie audiences might notice was zoomed over.
The four-issue War for the Planet of the Apes comic book series will be written by David F. Walker — who’s known for his Power Man and Iron Fist and Shaft comic book work for Marvel and Dynamite, respectively — with art by Jonas Scharf. The story takes place over one year set between Dawn and War, showing the war escalating across the United States, with different factions being drawn into conflict in various ways.
“I’m a huge fan of the original Planet of the Apes films, and I really love what they’ve done with the new series,” Walker said in a statement released by publisher BOOM! Studios. “Working on War for the Planet of the Apes not only means that I get to play around in my favorite film franchise, it means I get to contribute to what may ultimately be the best Apes film since the first one in 1968.”
The first issue of the series will be released in comic book stores and digitally July 12, two days before the new movie hits theaters, with subsequent issues coming monthly. Covers for the new series come from Mikhail Borulko (above) and Jay Shaw (below).
