Pedro Almodovar will receive the Writers Guild of America West’s Jean Renoir Award for Screenwriting Achievement. The award honors an international screenwriter who works outside the U.S. and in other languages.
A native of Spain, Almodovar has proven to be a triple threat in writing, directing and producing almost two dozen films including the Oscar-winning Talk to Her (2002) and the BAFTA-nominated Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. His next film, Silencio, which will be released through his independent production company, El Deseo, which he established with his brother, Agustin Almodovar.
His award-winning films have bolstered the careers of actors Penelope Cruz, who earned a best actress Oscar nomination for her role in his film Volver (2006), and Antonio Banderas, who gave a breakout performance in Law of Desire (1987), which screened at the Berlin Film Festival.
“His screenplays, which he directs with passion and fine care, have taught us about the exteriors of his native land and the interiors of our own hearts,” said WGAW vp Howard A. Rodman. “An Almodovar screenplay is a running leap off a Gaudi balcony, it flips, soars, ascends, careens, tumbles, falls — always landing, astonishingly and astonished, on its feet.”
The award recognizes an “international writer who has advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of a screenwriter.” Previous recipients of the award include the late Italian screenwriters Suso D’Amico and Tonino Guerra and Japanese filmmakers Akira Kurosawa and Shinobu Hashimoto.
Almodovar joins previously announced West Coast honorees Ben Affleck, Harold Ramis and Margaret Nagle. The 2015 Writers Guild Awards will take place on Feb. 14 via simultaneous ceremonies in New York and L.A.
