It would appear William Shatner is not quite through with Capt. James T. Kirk after all. The actor has been giving Star Trek fans a treat via social media with Captain’s Log updates — a plot device, usually done for story exposition, on the famed sci-fi TV show and subsequent films. Shatner, like many around the world, is self-isolating during the coronavirus pandemic.
His tweets came as a slight surprise to some fans as a few weeks back, Shatner reiterated that he was done playing Kirk onscreen — but he didn’t say anything about having some fun on Twitter.
“Captain’s Log: Stardate 1 of self imposed isolation. After having arrived at Planet Home, I was warmly greeted by Emissaries Espresso & Macchiato. I look forward to my planned respite from my normal duties. Kirk out,” the actor wrote to his more than 2.5 million Twitter followers. That tweet has more than 3,300 retweets and more than 22,000 likes.
Espresso and Macchiato are Shatner’s dogs. He is a well-known animal lover.
The actor followed that up by addressing those who had tickets to see his international tours, which had to be cut short due to the pandemic.
“Captain’s Log: Supplemental. While reflecting upon my experiences of the past week I do want to send my love, thanks & respect to those in Europe who came out to see me. Smiling face with 3 hearts For those canceled appearances I will work towards seeing if I can get back to those venues at some point,” Shatner wrote.
On Thursday, he tweeted: “Captain’s Log: Stardate 2 of self imposed isolation. Emissaries Macchiato & Espresso have been exploring a new territory called Underbed bestowing upon me tributes of missing socks and other items in an attempt to get my attention & adoration.”
And on Friday, Shatner shared, “Captain’s Log: Stardate 3 of self imposed isolation. Emissaries Macchiato & Espresso have been banished to backyard penal colony for chewing away mission leather bag. Had to venture to #officecolony to retrieve items for the month long celebration called #lockdownLA More later.”
Saturday, Shatner provided a lengthier log entry.
“Captain’s Log: Stardate 4 of self imposed isolation. It’s Day 2 of the #LockdownLA. The emissaries have gotten used to my alien presence. I am as uninteresting to them as a [chair] They have gone off to defend their borders from invading [squirrels]. I’ve been forced to ration my [food] & [drink],” he wrote. “I had hoped my supplies would last through isolation but with it now being twice as long I have calculated that my reserves may not hold out before the Enterprise can return & replenish. Otherwise spirits are high and things to do are plentiful to pass the time.”
Shatner is among the numerous stars using social media to entertain their audiences during the chaotic time. Others include singer John Legend, who has been streaming in-home performances; actor Josh Gad, who has been live-reading children’s books; and Broadway star Ben Platt, who had a impromptu dance party.
