Ahead of next year’s Wonder Woman movie, DC Entertainment is expanding the comic book mythology of the character with a new miniseries centering on an adventure featuring the Amazons of Themyscira years before Diana was born.
The Odyssey of the Amazons, a six-issue series launching in January 2017, will pit a group of Amazons against monsters, gods and more as they travel around the world in search of missing members of their tribe. Unfortunately, it’s a mission headed for disaster, as two of the group end up captured by Storm Giants of Norse mythology, leaving the remainder — led by Wonder Woman supporting character Hessia — to save their friends.
Odyssey will be illustrated by artist Ryan Benjamin and written by a newcomer to DC Entertainment, Kevin Grevioux, the actor and writer best known for his role in the Underworld movies and co-creating Marvel’s Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel comic book series.
The series was one of two January-launching miniseries announced by DC Wednesday; the second, The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom, sees writers Cary Bates and Greg Weisman return to the nuclear-powered superhero they wrote for 50 issues in the late 1990s, with art from Will Conrad.
The news comes as the United Nations named Wonder Woman as the U.N. Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. She’ll be honored Oct. 21 at the U.N. in honor of the character’s 75th anniversary.
The Odyssey of the Amazons No. 1 will be available January 18, two weeks after the debut issue of The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom.
