Kristen Wiig will play the villain in the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, director Patty Jenkins announced Friday.
The comedy star and Saturday Night Live standout will portray the DC comics villain Cheetah. The Hollywood Reporter reported in February that Wiig was in talks to play the character.
“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true,” Jenkins wrote. “So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!! @GalGadot.”
Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston introduced the villain in Wonder Woman No. 6 in 1943. However, the most popular version of Cheetah appeared in 1987 as Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, under the work of writer Len Wein and artist George Perez.
Few details are known about the follow-up to Wonder Woman, but the sequel will be set during the Cold War 1980s.
