Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick are joining Hailee Steinfeld in STX Entertainment’s coming-of-age film.
The comedy, currently untitled, centers on Nadine (Steinfeld) and Krista, inseparable best friends attempting to navigate high school together. But their friendship hits trouble when Nadine discovers her older brother and Krista have been secretly dating behind her back. They soon realize there is a fine line between best friends and worst enemies.
Harrelson plays a teacher at the school, while Sedgwick, who is currently in talks, would play Nadine’s mother.
Director-producer James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets, Spanglish) is producing, while Kelly Fremon, who wrote the spec script, is set to make it her directorial debut, with Brooks serving as a mentor. Richard Sakai and Julie Ansell also are producing.
Fremon’s spec, which was called Besties, was originally scooped up by Brooks’ Gracie Films back in 2011. STX signed on to make the film in April as Robert Simonds‘ new studio continues to build up its slate.
Harrelson’s upcoming films include the final installment in The Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay — Part 2, which opens in November; John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine with Casey Affleck, which opens March 4, 2016; Fox Searchlight’s Wilson, helmed by Craig Johnson; Lionsgate’s sequel Now You See Me: The Second Act; and the Western By Way of Helena with Liam Hemsworth. He’s repped by CAA.
Sedgwick starred on the TV series The Closer and won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work on the show. Her recent film credits include Time Out of Mind and The Humbling. She executive produced the TNT series Proof. She’s repped by CAA, Impression Entertainment and Schreck Rose.
