‘Yogi Bear,’ ‘The Tourist’ Top Home Video Sales Charts

Warner Home Video’s family-friendly Yogi Bear topped the national home video sales charts the week ending March 27, while the Sony Pictures thriller The Tourist was the top-renting DVD and Blu-ray Disc as well as the top-selling Blu-ray Disc.

Yogi, based on the early 1960s cartoon about a bear and his sidekick (Boo-Boo) living in Jellystone Park, debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The film, which grossed just under $100 million at the box office, generated 28% of its first-week unit sales from Blu-ray, a high percentage for a movie aimed at young kids.

The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, finished a close second on the sales charts, moving 94% as many units as Yogi its first week in stores. But with 34% of its first-week sales coming from Blu-ray, the film outsold Yogi on the high-definition format and debuted at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray sales chart.

The Tourist, which grossed $67.6 million in theaters, debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine‘s rental chart, followed at No. 2 by another new release from Sony Pictures, the comedy How Do You Know ($30.2 million).

Paramount’s The Fighter, which debuted at No. 1 on all three charts, slipped to No. 3 on all three charts its second week in stores (except Blu-ray, where it was No. 4).

Rounding out the week’s top five sellers: Universal Studios’ Skyline, a sci-fi film with $21.4 million in theatrical earnings, debuted at No. 4, while How Do You Know bowed at No. 5.

Rounding out the week’s top five rentals: Warner’s Due Dateat No. 4 (the comedy has just come off its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox) and Lionsgate’s The Switch at No. 5 (down from No. 2 the previous week).

Yogi Bear didn’t make it into the top 20 rentals chart because as a Warner title it won’t be available at Netflix or Redbox until 28 days after its release.
