Glamour is partnering with Girlgaze to do their part in achieving gender equity in Hollywood.
The magazine and the female-focused digital media company are launching film competition #NewView, which is meant to highlight the points of view of female filmmakers from around the world.
“Obviously much has been written and said about the barriers for women directors and we all know the statistics,” explained Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive. “But we wanted to do something that was more meaningful than just discussing and reporting on the problem.”
Added Girlgaze founder Amanda de Cadenet: “Our objective at Girlgaze is to help females close the gender gap by telling their stories. We are choosing to support this demo because they deserve a seat at the table.”
To enter, directors must create an original short film — three to five minutes in length — that showcases their perspective on an issue, their own life, or on greater culture. From the submitted films, five winners will be chosen by Leive and de Cadenet, along with an extensive panel of judges.
Zendaya, Geena Davis, Gia Coppola, Jada Pinkett Smith, Rashida Jones and Amandla Stenberg are among the judges for #NewView competition, along with Chloë Grace Moretz, YouTuber Lilly Singh, as well as filmmakers Dee Rees, Kimberly Peirce and Sam Taylor-Johnson.
“By providing young female professionals with a platform on which to display their work, Glamour x Girlgaze is giving them a seat at the table, while creating an opportunity for us to see what stories engage the next generation of women,” said fellow judge Tracee Ellis Ross.
HBO’ Sheila Nevins, Netflix’s Bela Bajaria and Condé Nast’s Dawn Ostroff will also act as judges, alongside Shonda Rhimes and Jill Soloway, who said, “Initiatives like the Glamour and Girlgaze #NewView film competition are crucial because the only way we’re going to see a change in our film industry is if more organizations and studios step up and make it a priority to let female voices take the lead.”
The winning filmmakers will have their submissions released on Glamour.com and Girlgaze.com, and will be awarded $3000, in addition to a production budget to create a short film for Glamour, or one of the major brands Birchbox, LuMee, THE OUTNET.com or South Coast Plaza.
De Cadenet is particularly excited that the filmmakers will have the opportunity to work with these brands to create content that they can they show to other potential clients, saying, “That is one of the best things we can do for young filmmakers.”
