Star Trek and Avatar actress Zoe Saldana and her longtime stylist Petra Flannery (THR’s top stylist for 2015, who also counts Emma Stone and Claire Danes as clients) hosted an intimate lunch at Freds at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills for designer Joseph Altuzarra on Sept. 24.
Mad Men’s January Jones and Saldana chatted up the New York-based designer as guests dined al fresco — on salad (nicoise or steak), pommes frites, lemon sorbet and hand-rolled chocolate truffles. The reason for the celebration? The 32-year-old designer, who launched his ready-to-wear line in 2008, just unveiled handbags.
Altuzarra’s “Ghianda” collection includes two chic styles in a range of neutrals with braided tassel straps and gold hardware (we especially love the midnight blue crocodile hobo bag that Flannery was carrying). The bags, which range from $2,195 to $2,995 (and $28,000 for the ultra-deluxe croc), are available exclusively for fall/winter 2015 in Barneys flagship stores and online at Barneys.com. Here, a quick catch-up with the designer:
What was the inspiration for the Ghianda bags?
The braided detailing and the fringe are from bull-riding ropes. I found a guy, like a cowboy, who actually braids bull-riding ropes and I called him and he made a prototype and then we started making them in leather. It’s sort of the central piece of the bags and what I think makes them really distinctive and different.
What are the two bag styles?
There’s a saddle bag that has a flap and a larger hobo style—both come in different iterations, either with that sort of braided closure or with a metallic closure.
All of the bags are in predominantly neutral shades, right?
Yeah, there is navy, caramel, black and taupe as well.
You flew in from New York last night…how long are you staying in L.A.?
I am only here for a day. We did eat at Sugarfish — it’s so good! And I went today to this place called Hugo’s [in West Hollywood].
Last question. If you could dress anyone in Hollywood, who would your dream client be?
I have one person, but she is not a Hollywood person. I love Amal Clooney — I’d want to dress Amal!
