‘Zombieland’ Sequel Shuffles Forward With ‘Godzilla’ Writer

The Zombieland sequel now has a writer.

Sony has hired Dave Callaham for its follow-up to the hit 2009 horror-comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Insiders say Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will oversee the script with the intention for him to helm, but there is no deal.

Deadline first reported the hiring of Callaham.

Callaham’s writing credits include this summer’s Godzilla reboot, which grossed $524.9 million worldwide, and the 2010 Sylvester Stallone actioner The Expendables.

Zombieland was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and collected $75.5 million domestically. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, it told the story of four people heading out on a road trip to find sanctuary during a zombie apocalypse.

Sony had been developing a sequel with Reese and Wernick until things stalled. Amazon filmed a pilot for a Zombieland series but passed on the show in May 2013. Reese blamed the pilot’s failure on negative comments from “diehard Zombieland fans.”
