Date My Ex: Jo & Slade

What with Tila Tequila, Flava Flav and “Meet My Folks,” it’s apparent that the reality dating show genre has been stretched pretty thin. What possibly could be next? A dating show with a borderline psycho ex-fiance looming in the background? Yes, by Jove, that’s it.

Jo De La Rosa, featured in two seasons of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Orange County” even though, technically, she wasn’t one, is being recycled for this series. So is her former fiance, Slade Smiley.

Jo moved to Los Angeles to launch a music career. Smiley moved to Los Angeles, too, where he is Jo’s friend and business partner. Also, the landlord for her dates. Yes, four guys at a time share a room in Smiley’s house while she sorts through them like so many avocados in a produce department.

Smiley warns the first bunch of suitors that Jo is like family and “nobody messes with my family.” Both Jo and her dates think the whole setup is pretty weird, but by then it’s too late for them. You, on the other hand, still have the option of clicking on something more emotionally engaging like “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”

In addition to the misnamed Smiley, Jo’s roommates, Myia Ingoldsby and Katy Metz, also are in the show. Myia is the unofficial host. The press release says she “brings a special sensibility and sound judgment to the show.” Perhaps this comes out in the second episode.

Dates vary from a nighttime helicopter tour of Los Angeles to a rock-climbing expedition in Malibu. Each is edited down to a couple of minutes, which seems more than adequate to convey the innate awkwardness of the situation.

At the conclusion of each of the eight episodes, Jo dumps all but one of the guys with the catchphrase, “I think we should just be friends.” Judging from the comments of the jilted suitors as they wheel out their luggage, they won’t be exchanging Facebook invitations with Jo anytime soon.

They’ll be fine. With any luck, they’ll get over it by the time Jo is on “Top Chef” or “Workout.”
