100 Faces of Fall

With a new season of shows comes a new crop of potential stars. Some are returning to the small screen after years away (Malibu Country’s Reba McEntire), some are back after only months off screen (Nashville’s Connie Britton), and some are heading to series TV for the first time (VegasDennis Quaid). Who will break out the way New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel and Revenge’s Emily VanCamp did in 2011 remains an open — and much- debated — question. Although NBC and Fox will roll out new series star- ring relative newcomers Andrew Rannells (The New Normal) and Jordana Spiro (The Mob Doctor), respectively, in the coming days, the 2012-13 season won’t officially kick off until Sept. 24. Until then, such efforts as Andre Braugher’s Last Resort (ABC), Billy Burke’s Revolution (NBC), Lucy Liu’s Elementary (CBS), Stephen Amell’s Arrow (The CW) and Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project (Fox) can coast on strong buzz, while critically panned series including Jami Gertz’s The Neighbors (ABC) and David Krumholtz’s Partners (CBS) can only hope viewers hold them in higher esteem. Over the course of a week at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in late July, THR photographed the faces of the new season as they tried to convince the press that their series are fresh, fun and, yes, worth watching. -- Lacey Rose and Lesley Goldberg
