'10,000 BC' stays No. 1 overseas

$38 mil fends off 'Horton'

First-place finishes in at least 30 of 51 overseas markets played over the weekend propelled "10,000 BC," director Roland Emmerich's prehistoric epic, to the No. 1 spot internationally for the second consecutive stanza with an estimated gross of $38 million from about 6,900 screens.

20th Century Fox's No. 1 domestic title, "Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who!" opened at No. 2 internationally with an animated $14.2 million from 4,885 screens in 29 territories. Sony's "Vantage Point," the No. 5 film domestically, took the third spot overseas with $8 million secured from 2,865 screens in 35 markets.

"10,000 BC" bowed in the top U.K. spot with an estimated $3.8 million from 431 screens and finished first in Korea ($3.3 million from 212 sites) according to Warner Bros. International. The film's overseas gross stands at $73 million, with $134.2 million worldwide. "Vantage Point" has an international cume of $40.3 million ($99.5 million globally), while "Horton's" worldwide total stands at $59.3 million.

Muscular Japan openings substantially powered Disney's "Enchanted," the weekend's No. 4 title, and Paramount Pictures International's release of "No Country for Old Men," which finished in fifth place.

The musical fantasy debuted a dominant No. 1 in the market with an estimated $5.4 million from 323 screens, accounting for just about all of the weekend's $5.6 million take from 950 screens in 23 markets. "Enchanted's" overseas cume stands at $188.9 million (versus $127.7 domestic).

The Oscar-laden Coen brothers crime drama "No Country" racked up an estimated $492,000 from 41 sites in Japan for a lusty $12,000 per-screen average, pushing its overall weekend take to $4.7 million from 1,699 situations at 52 markets. "No Country" has grossed $68 million internationally thus far.

Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles" opened in 17 markets, pushing the family fantasy-drama's overall weekend take to $4.6 million from 1,565 spots in 22 territories and raising the international cume to $11.7 million. Fox's "Jumper" hoisted its cume to $104.9 million thanks to a $4.5 million weekend at 2,733 screens in 47 markets. Universal's "The Other Bolyn Girl" raised $4 million from 1,127 screens in 13 territories handled by the distributor, boosting its cume to $13.1 million.

France continues to perk with Pathe Distribution's "Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis" (Welcome to the Land of the Shtis), writer-director Danny Boon's tale of a postal worker relocated to a small northern village, which was a dominant No. 1 in the market. It grossed an estimated $3 million in its latest five days from Paris and suburbs alone.

No. 2 in France was Warner's "10,000 BC," which debuted to $3.4 million from 569 sites, while Gaumont's "MR 73," writer-director Olivier Marchal's crime drama starring Daniel Auteuil, opened No. 3 in the Paris area.

Pathe's tentpole comedy "Asterix at the Olympic Games" is running out of gas, dropping to No. 18 in Paris and garnering an estimated $553,000 in its seventh stanza in France, Germany and Austria and in its sixth round in Spain and Italy. Cumes from those markets, excluding France, total $28.5 million.

Fox's "27 Dresses" pushed its international total to $42.7 million thanks to a $2.1 million weekend from 1,250 screens in 32 markets. Disney's release of Miramax's "There Will Be Blood" hoisted its overseas cume to $26.3 million, making it director Paul Thomas Anderson's best grossing film ever internationally -- outstripping the $26 million generated by 1999's "Magnolia." "Blood's" weekend take was $2.1 million from 1,015 screens in 44 markets.

Disney's "The Game Plan" with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson declined just 1% from the prior stanza in its second weekend in the U.K., finishing No. 4 in the market with an estimated $1.5 million from 350 spots, pushing its overseas cume to $29.9 million. Fox's "Juno" also grabbed $1.5 million from 1,099 sites in 16 markets, raising its cume to $48.2 million.

Universal acquired Summit Entertainment/Touchstone Pictures' "Step Up 2 the Streets" for distribution in five markets and opened the musical romance about dance students in New Zealand (where it was No. 1) and in Switzerland for an estimated $1.1 million overall from 76 locations.

Disney's "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," which opens in China Monday, has generated an overseas cume to date of $224.1 million (versus $217 million domestic), 30% more than its predecessor, 2004's "National Treasure." Disney also had "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" in the U.K. at 65 3-D-equipped sites for $504,000, earning a nifty $7,754 per screen. The concert film's cume stands at $1.1 million from limited 3-D runs in seven markets.

Other international cume updates: DreamWorks/Warner's "Sweeney Todd," $95.7 million; Sony's "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," $50.3 million,thanks to a $2.6 million weekend from 1,890 screens in 35 markets; Universal's "Charlie Wilson's War," $43.7 million; Warner's "The Bucket List," $50.5 million; Fox's "The Darjeeling Limited," $14 million; Universal's "Atonement," $75.1 million; Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks," $137.5 million; Universal's "Definitely, Maybe," $10.9 million; Fox's "Meet the Spartans," $21 million, thanks to a $1.8 million weekend at 1,221 screens in 15 markets; Universal's "Untraceable," $3.8 million (Universal territories only); Paramount's "The Eye," $2.5 million (from PPI markets only); Universal's "In Bruges," $1.7 million (in just 10 playdates in Ireland); DreamWorks/Paramount's "The Kite Runner," $30.1 million; and New Line's "The Golden Compass," $273 million (versus $70 million domestic).
