VMAs Host Katy Perry Jokes About Trump, Fidget Spinners and 'Handmaid's Tale' in Opener

The ceremony celebrated the best in music at the Forum in Inglewood on Sunday.

In the wake of her recent album release, Katy Perry is hosting and performing at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live from the "Fabulous" Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday.

The Witness singer arrived on stage flying through a cloud of smoke, wearing an astronaut costume. Paying homage to the show’s newly renamed "Moon Person" award, Perry acted as if she had just traveled from space prior to the ceremony.

During her opening monologue, Perry acted unaware of what has occurred in the year that she has been away. Attempting to familiarize herself with current events, Perry was quick to joke about The Handmaid’s Tale and fidget spinners.

After descending in a spacesuit, Perry looked through a rack of clothes to change. Perry then jokingly pulled out the signature red costume from the successful Hulu original and jokingly asked whether the outfit was Balenciaga."Very retro-pilgrim, it's super cool," Perry joked.

The outspoken star was also quick to quip about politics, asking the audience, “You figured out all of the problems in the world and the world is doing so well right? Everything is fine?”

Alluding to another pop culture phenomenon, Perry presented a fidget spinner, asking whether that was how the world was coping with being "on fire."

During the MTV VMA preshow, Perry expressed jitters over her hosting gig, “I’m terrified tonight. I’m not very good at speaking and I find a lot of times that when I do speak, it gets me in trouble.”

When asked how she feels about being the night’s emcee, Perry said, “I just gotta keep smiling through it and ignore the haters.”

Perry also performed her single, "Swish Swish" alongside Nicki Minaj.
