Kim Kardashian West's Glam Squad on How They Created Her Met Gala Look
The reality star made a splash with her "California girl stepping out of the ocean" look, the first dress designed by Thierry Mugler in 20 years.
She is known for her showstopping looks and this year's Met Gala was no exception for Kim Kardashian West, who wore a custom latex beaded Mugler dress.
“This is the first time in 20 years Mr. Mugler has designed for the House of Mugler. So to come and design this gown for me is such an honor,” Kardashian West said on the red carpet. “This is about eight months in the making. He envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean.” Kim's glam squad makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic and hairstylist Chris Appleton therefore had a pretty clear brief when it came to creating her hair and makeup look.
"For this look we wanted Kim to appear wet making it seem as if she just walked out of a body of water," Dedivanovic told The Hollywood Reporter. "Keeping to the color of the dress, the theme of the makeup was monochromatic, dewy and bronzed."
Because the pair have worked together so long, Kardashian West gave Dedivanovic a free hand with her look for the evening — this is his sixth year working with her on the event." Kim usually lets me decide on the makeup," he explained. "We have a similar aesthetic and she has a lot of trust in me." That said, Dedivanovic shared that Kardashian West's glam team worked closely with designer Manfred Thierry Mugler for months to capture the vision for the overall look. "We would bounce ideas off of each other and share inspiration."
When it came to the night Dedivanovic said. "Kim’s skin was a huge focus point of the look. When giving the client glowing skin, I recommend spraying the face with Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist. This is a quick and easy way to keep the skin looking dewy and fresh. I also like to spray the mist directly into a clean beauty blender and gently pat the high points of the face. This can also be done with any emollient product. Before starting glam, I cleansed Kim’s face using the Tatcha Classic Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder. I then placed Tatcha’s Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask on her face for 10 minutes to restore firmness and luminosity. Lastly, I put a few pumps of Tatcha’s Violet-C Brightening Serum into the skin to lock in moisture."
For Kim’s eyes Dedivanovic wanted to mimic the reflection of light glistening off of a body of water. "I layered both Albanian and Bronzy from the KKW Beauty X Mario Palette on the eyelids. I then buffed the lower lash line using Albanian. I highlighted the brow bone with a mix of 2008 and Armenian. To give the glistening effect in the middle of the eyelid, I added a highlight of Ultra Lightbeams in Iridescent."
"For Kim’s face, we started by using the KKW Beauty Concealer Kit in Shade 7 and set the concealer using the Baking Powder in shade Bake 2. For added radiance, I finished off by using a clean fluffy brush to apply the Brightening Powder in shade Brightening 2. I then contoured her cheekbones, forehead and jawline with the KKW Beauty Creme Contour Sticks in Medium II and Dark I. To keep the skin glowing, I added a touch of Ultra Lightbeams in Iridescent to the cheekbones and cupid’s bow. I also brought the glow down to her hands, legs and décolletage."
Finally came the super-glossy nude lip that he wanted the lip to be monochromatic and similar to the shade of her dress. "I first lined the lips with KKW Beauty Crème Lip Liner in Nude 1.5 (coming soon!) and KKW Beauty Crème Lip Liner in Nude 2. I then added KKW Beauty Creme Nude Lipstick in Nude 2. Finally, I sealed the lips using KKW x Mario gloss in Super Nude."
He then applied Color Wow Pop & Lock Gloss Treatment and Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray all over the hair. “Once both products were distributed evenly throughout the hair, create an off-center part and create waves by pushing the hair backward and forward in an “S” motion.”
