'3 Idiots' tops IIFA nominations

India's all-time highest-grossing film earns 14 noms

NEW DELHI -- India's most successful film, “3 Idiots” -- which has grossed over $90 million since release last Christmas -- has bagged 14 nominations for the 2010 International Indian Film Academy awards, to be held in Sri Lanka June 3-5.

The IIFAs are organized by Wizcraft International Entertainment are only held outside India, with the first awards hosted in 2000 at London's Millennium Dome. Last year, IIFA celebrated its 10th anniversary in Macau while in years past the event has traveled to cities such as Johannesburg, Singapore, Amsterdam, Bangkok and the northern England area of Yorkshire.

Distributed worldwide by Reliance Big Pictures, comedy caper “3 Idiots” has been nominated in all categories except best supporting actress, including best film, best actor (Aamir Khan), best actress (Kareena Kapoor) and best director (Rajkumar Hirani).

Other nominations include romantic musical “Love Aaj Kal” with nine nominations while IIFA brand ambassador and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Paa” and acclaimed director Vishal Bharadwaj's “Kaminey” both received eight nominations each.

The nominations were finalized after a round of voting by industry professionals in March. Meanwhile, the general public can vote online via the IIFA Web site from Monday until June 1 to select winners in the popular category. The awards process is audited by PriceWaterhouse Coopers. The event will be broadcast globally by Star TV.
