Samira Wiley Is a Conflicted Mother Who Lets a Murder Happen in '37' (Exclusive Video)
The 'Orange Is the New Black' breakout leads Puk Grasten's drama, based on the 1964 rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, and the 37 people who "did nothing" as it happened.
Samira Wiley is a expectant mother in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of 37.
Puk Grasten's drama is based on the 1964 rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, and the 37 people who "did nothing" as it happened. The New York Times published the article about the neighbors, who are depicted as monsters that used her 35-minute fight for survival as their own entertainment. However, the film's retelling — introducing three disparate families, the lonely neighbor and the doorman, and spanning the moments before and after the crime — notes that the situation was much more multifaceted and complex.
The Orange Is the New Black breakout, seen next in Hulu's Handmaid's Tale, plays Joyce Smith who, with her husband and son, fled the race riots in Harlem and have just moved into the Queens neighborhood. In the clip, which takes place before the murder, she sees that her 5-year-old son seeks comfort in his doll, but her husband wants him to be tough — for survival's sake.
37 opens in theaters and on demand on Oct. 7.
