4 New (and Reopening) California Hotels for In-State Getaways

From San Francisco's newest Four Seasons to a hotel co-owned by Robert De Niro in Palo Alto, travelers don't have to go far for a relaxing stay.

CAMBRIA At the 25-room White Water lodge, which sits on Moonstone Beach (located a little south of Hearst Castle), most rooms have full or partial ocean views and fireplaces. Owner PRG Hospitality Group also recently opened a sister property, the San Luis Creek Lodge, in San Luis Obispo. Interior designer Nina Freudenberger, whose client list includes Elizabeth Banks, designed both properties. Rooms from $299, whitewatercambria.com.

LA QUINTA The new season of The Bachelorette recently filmed at the La Quinta Resort & Club, which opened in 1926 and was a favorite back in the day of Greta Garbo and Frank Capra. Located about a half-hour drive from downtown Palm Springs, it is now a Waldorf Astoria property set on 45 sprawling acres featuring 620 casitas and suites, 98 villas and 41 pools. PALO ALTO The 73-room Nobu Hotel Palo Alto, co-owned by Robert De Niro, features a number of ryokan-inspired accommodations, plus outdoor dining at its Nobu restaurant. Rooms from $350 a night, nobuhotels.com.

OJAI Renovations are near completion at the Capri Hotel (currently open), a 30-room retro property built in 1963, where furnishings marry California midcentury and Italian '60s and '70s vibes. Owner Shelter Social Club also operates four other properties: The Ojai Rancho Inn; The Hamlet Inn in Solvang; Los Alamos' Alamo Motel; and The Agave Inn in Santa Barbara. SAN FRANCISCO The 155-room Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero is located in the city's Financial District and sits on the top 11 floors of a 48-story tower, offering panoramic city views and rooms with freestanding soaking tubs. Rooms from $455, fourseasons.com.
