5 from STAR to move to News Corp. HK office

Top execs take new roles, HK staff cut as much as 40%

HONG KONG-- Five senior executives from STAR TV are to shift to the new News Corp. office in Hong Kong.

Ella Betsy Wong becomes News Corp.'s general counsel in Asia, reporting to Jeffrey Palker in Europe. Anthony Day is to head strategy and corporate development activities at the new office, while also remaining in the role of News Corp.'s director of corporate development Europe and Asia. Joe Welch becomes News Corp.'s senior vice president, government relations Asia, while Jannie Poon becomes senior vice president, corporate affairs and communications and spokesperson for News Corp. in the Asia region. Teresa Ho has been named News Corp. head of organization, development and learning in Asia.

The moves announced on Monday by James Murdoch, News Corp.'s chairman and chief executive, Europe and Asia, follow the confirmation earlier this month of a major restructuring at STAR.

The pan-regional TV and entertainment group is being broken into India and Greater China units, while its English-language channel management operation is to be merged with Fox International Channels' Asia unit.

Those changes are expected to result in up to 200 job losses, or some 40% of STAR's Hong Kong workforce, over the next year.
