56.com back on air in China

Video-sharing site reopens after 38-day outage

SHANGHAI -- Chinese online video site 56.com reopened Friday, 38 days after it inexplicably shut down.

The YouTube rival resumed operation after "a complete system overhaul" begun June 3, marketing manager Bai Jie told The Hollywood Reporter.

The site awaits approval of a video distribution license from the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, Bai said.

Competitor Youku.com announced its SARFT was granted on Wednesday. Both sites and competitor Tudou.com have faced official criticism for posting videos distasteful to China's censors.
