'The 5th Wave' Finds Its Sammy (Exclusive)
Chloe Grace Moretz stars in Sony's YA adaptation
The 5th Wave, Sony's upcoming YA adaptation of the popular book by Rick Yancey, has found the actor who will play Chloe Grace Moretz's younger brother: Zackary Arthur. The role is central to the story because Moretz's character's main motivation is to rescue her sibling.
The story centers on 16-year-old Cassie Sullivan (Moretz) who is one of only a few humans who has survived five waves of alien attacks on Earth. She's determined to save her younger brother, Sammy, who is being held captive at an alien compound. But because the aliens, who look like humans, are everywhere, she is unable to trust anyone to help her.
Jurassic World actor Nick Robinson and British newcomer Alex Roe also star in the film along with Maika Monroe and Liev Schreiber.
J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) is directing the project, which was written by Susannah Grant. Lynn Harris, Tobey Maguire, Graham King and Matthew Plouffe are producing, while Denis O’Sullivan and Richard Middleton are executive producing.
The 5th Wave hit shelves in May 2013, spending 20 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list and selling 240,000 hardcover units and 55,000 e-books. The second book in the series, The Infinite Sea, comes out Sept. 16 via Penguin's Putnam Juvenile. A trilogy is planned, which means if the Sony film works, there's the possibility of a new YA film franchise.
Arthur, who was selected from among hundreds of young actors for the 5th Wave role, most recently recurred on Amazon's comedy Transparent. He's repped by Coast to Coast, Ovation Talent and Myman Greenspan.
