That '70s Fashion Show: Selena Gomez's "Bad Liar" Music Video Is a Trip
In more ways than one.
Selena Gomez's jangly new single, "Bad Liar," is being lauded as 2017's song of the summer thanks to its upbeat and easy rhythm and slightly salty lyrics.
Right on cue, Gomez released the music video to accompany the song, and boy, is it a doozy. The 24-year-old took us back a few decades to what looks like a grittier version of That '70s Show taking place in Anytown, USA, where she plays the long-haired protagonist — as well as both of said protagonist's parents, and the blonde high school gym teacher whom both her side-eyed father and Gomez's protagonist have eyes for. Following?
Regardless, all of this means that the pop star had the opportunity to get dolled up in the most incredible costumes and makeup, from a feathered Farrah Fawcett-style wig and gym shorts to a perfectly coiffed bouffant, to a stache that would make even Nick Offerman crack a smile.
Save for the ill-fitting beige suit, each of the looks are on brand for Gomez, who is currently the face of Coach. Creative director Stuart Vevers has culled inspiration from the prairies of the Wild West — with dinky florals and horsey prints — as well as the '60s and '70s rock 'n' roll culture, with images of Elvis plastered on tees. Though it's clearly a throwback to a different era, the video has a fashionable relevance about it that we can definitely get behind.
