80 Years of The Hollywood Reporter

The most glamorous and memorable moments from a storied history.

It was only 17 days after his divorce became final from his second wife, Anna, that News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch, then 68, married Wendi Deng, 37 years his junior, in a 1999 ceremony aboard his yacht Morning Glory in New York Harbor. The Hollywood Reporter noted the 82 guests included "Michael Milken and Russian entrepreneur Boris Berezovsky. Welsh singing prodigy Charlotte Church performed three songs." As Church sang, the bride walked down the aisle in a cream-colored silk-and-lace Richard Tyler gown. Deng -- daughter of a factory director in Guangzhou, China -- had come to California to study in 1988 at age 19. Two years later, she wed engineer Jake Cherry, then 53. He was the married father in the family that sponsored her student visa and in whose home she lived while enrolled at California State University, Northridge. She divorced Cherry after 31 months (which coincidentally qualified her for a green card) and later attended Yale. She met Murdoch while working at News Corp.'s Star TV Hong Kong subsidiary around 1998. The couple now has two daughters and live in a $44 million apartment on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue that they bought in 2004. Asked then by The New York Times why they were leaving their 9,300-square-foot SoHo loft, Deng said, "We are trying to simplify our life."
