'A Walk Among the Tombstones' Trailer: Liam Neeson Is a Disgraced Cop (Video)

The actor plays a PI who's out for vengeance in the crime drama based on Lawrence Block's best-selling novel.

Liam Neeson is an unlicensed private investigator who wants answers in the first trailer for the upcoming crime drama A Walk Among the Tombstones

In a film that is darker in tone than some of his recent action hits, Neeson plays Scudder, a former cop who left the force after a booze-fueled mishap.

Scudder is hired by a heroin dealer (Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens) to track down the guys who brutally killed his wife. But Scudder learns that this murder might not have been an isolated incident.

"Whoever it was that took your wife didn't just pick your name out of a hat," Scudder tells his client. "They've been following her, know your schedule. They've done this before, and they're gonna do it again."

A Walk Among the Tombstones is written and directed by Scott Frank and is based on the 1992 best-selling novel by Lawrence Block. Frank is best known as the screenwriter of such films as Minority Report and The Wolverine. This is his second time in the director's chair, following the 2007 Joseph Gordon-Levitt starrer The Lookout.

Neeson has been on a tear in 2014, as Tombstones will mark his fifth major release. He provided voices in The Nut Job and the smash hit The Lego Movie, while he was in his shoot-first wheelhouse with Non-Stop and A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Universal Pictures releases the film on September 19.
