AACTA International Awards: 'Nomadland' Leads With 6 Nominations

Multiple nominations also went to 'The Father,' 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' and 'Mank.'

Chloé Zhao's Nomadland dominated the nominations for the 2021 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International Awards with six mentions across 11 categories.

On Friday, as the competition for the 10th AACTA International Awards, including new global TV categories, were unveiled, Zhao's American road movie continued its run as an early awards season contender by picking up best director and best screenplay nominations and a best actress mention for Frances McDormand for her role in Nomadland.

Florian Zeller's The Father, Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 and David Fincher's Mank also picked up four nominations each. The AACTA Awards also gave three nominations to Schitt's Creek and two mentions each for The Queen's Gambit and Normal People.

Nomadland, The Father, Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will compete for best film honors. And the best TV drama category will pit The Crown, I May Destroy You and The Mandalorian against Mystery Road and The Queen's Gambit.

The AACTA International Awards in 2021 has expanded to include global TV across four new categories: best drama series, best comedy series, best actor in a series and best actress in a series. Usually held in Los Angeles, this year the awards show, owing to travel restrictions due to the pandemic, will produce a highlights package of acceptance speeches to stream on AACTA’s YouTube channel starting on March 5.

“Even though we can’t hold an event in Los Angeles this year, we thought it very important to still shine a light on the best of the global screen industry, give our members the opportunity to have their say too and mark another excellent year of work," AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said in a statement.
