ABC finds Cedric pilot entertaining
EmptyABC is joining the fray of summer pilot orders with a nod to an untitled multicamera comedy starring Cedric the Entertainer.
The project, from ABC Studios, stars Cedric as a man who has always been the proud breadwinner for his family and has difficulty adjusting when his wife's hobby turns into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
"The King of Queens" alums Rock Reuben and Michael Soccio penned the script with Cedric. Reuben is executive producing, with Soccio, Cedric and Cedric's manager Eric Rhone serving as co-executive producers.
The project stems from Cedric's talent deal with ABC and ABC Studios that he inked in November.
With the pickup of the Cedric comedy, ABC joins CBS, NBC and Fox, which have been greenlighting pilots and aggressively buying pitches in the face of a potential writers strike.
With the Cedric project, ABC also is returning to its roots of such multicamera domestic comedies as "Roseanne," "Home Improvement" and, most recently, "My Wife and Kids" and "According to Jim," which have worked well for the network.
ABC opted for an edgier fare in the past two years, picking up only single-camera projects to series. Its upcoming half-hour series are "Samantha Who?" "Carpoolers" and "Cavemen" -- all single-camera -- while its only returning comedy is veteran "Jim." Out of its 16 comedy pilots this past development season, only four were multicamera, none of them a family show.
On TV, Cedric most recently toplined and exec produced Fox's sketch comedy series "Cedric the Entertainer Presents."
On the big screen, he co-stars in the critically praised "Talk to Me."
Cedric, Reuben and Soccio are repped by CAA.
