ABC, NBC pick up drama pilots

'Eastwick,' 'Mercy' get green lights

Three modern-day witches and three hospital nurses have entered the fall 2009 fray as ABC and NBC handed out pilot orders to dramas "Eastwick" and "Mercy," respectively.

"Eastwick," from Warner Bros. Television, is loosely based on the 1987 feature "The Witches of Eastwick," which starred Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeifer and Jack Nicholson.

Penned by Maggie Friedman ("Jack & Bobby"), the project follows three women in the town of Eastwick who embark upon lives with new powers after an enigmatic stranger comes to town.

NBC's "Mercy," Universal Media Studios, is a drama with comedic elements that revolves around three nurses bound together in friendship by the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives.

Liz Heldens ("Friday Night Lights") wrote the script and will exec produce.

NBC is on the verge of a couple of other drama pilot pickups, with Dario Scardapane's medical drama "Trauma" said to be pending and a project from Jesse Alexander said to be very close.
