With the "It" factor of sneakers moving at warp speed, the Adidas Originals ClimaCool silhouette (launched in 2002 in mesh with a perforated sock liner and signature vented detailing) is already referred to as “retro” in certain circles. Given that the ClimaCool is akin to air conditioning for the feet, it makes sense that the brand would create a version inspired by Los Angeles, where weather is balmy year-round.

Due to hit Adidas Originals stores in Beverly Grove, L.A., New York, London, Paris, Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo, Milan, Mexico City and Moscow on Tuesday, Aug. 1, the limited-edition L.A. iteration of the ClimaCool 1 ($120) is designed with Velcro closures in lieu of laces, adding to the easygoing vibe and comfort factor.

“ClimaCool 1’s built-in ventilation details, coupled with the throw-back Velcro closures, imbue the sneaker with the nonchalant yet confident, casual cool inherent to L.A. street culture,” says Adidas representative Brett Anderson. The exclusive gray-and-white colorway for the City of Angels “reflects the brief moments of the early morning before the sun starts to rise,” according to a brand statement. (i.e., that time when many Hollywood stars and execs are gearing up for a power hike in Runyon Canyon or a run up and down the Santa Monica stairs).

This sixth and final Adidas Originals city-inspired sneaker (which will not be sold online), the L.A. edition is part of the 2017 series that included a July release of the EQT Support ADV in Berlin with a color and texture influenced by that city’s oxidized copper rooftops and sculptures; a navy version of the classic Superstar with an interior imprinted with a map of New York’s five boroughs in June; a May edition of the NMD R2 with a striped motif on the tongue and heel to reference Tokyo’s Shibuya Crossing; a black-and-red run of the Iniki Runner Boost dedicated to London in April; and the March issue of a Parisian version of the Tubular Instinct in deep blue with metallic-tipped reflective yarn lacings as an homage to the City of Light.
