AEG-Ehrlich deal a big production
New venture for awards shows, other 'signature' eventsEntertainment and sports facilities and production company AEG has acquired Ken Ehrlich Prods. and formed a new joint venture, AEG Ehrlich Ventures Llc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As a producer, Ehrlich has specialized in music-related and entertainment programming, with an emphasis on live awards shows. He has produced the Grammys since 1980 as well as the past three Emmycasts. He has worked on the Latin Grammys, the European MTV Awards and the MTV Movie Awards, which he created in 1992.
Ehrlich also has produced dozens of single-artist specials for broadcast and cable networks, including programs featuring Elton John, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, the Eagles and Whitney Houston. He created MTV's "Divas" series, produced 2001's "Night for John Lennon and New York City" and helmed Live 8's Philadelphia show last year.
AEG's venture with Ehrlich will broaden its in-house production reach in the ever-growing number of facilities it operates. The Los Angeles-based firm owns or controls such venues as Staples Center in Los Angeles and Nokia Theatre Times Square in New York. The company is overseeing the development of L.A. Live, a downtown Los Angeles sports and entertainment complex that will include Nokia Theatre L.A.
"With less than one year before the opening of the 7,250-seat Nokia Theatre Los Angeles, Ken's credibility and experience will give us the ability to not only bring every existing award show and production to the theater but the wherewithal to create signature entertainment productions and events that this city and our industry are desperately in need of," AEG president and CEO Timothy Leiweke said.
AEG Live president and CEO Randy Phillips, whose division will oversee the new joint venture, said of Ehrlich, "His addition to our family will help us to serve our clients even better by providing new marketing platforms and additional ways to exploit their careers while building a truly unique and stand-alone business unit."
