AFA expands submission process

13 categories now allow open entries

HONG KONG -- Now in their fourth year, the Asian Film Awards are to enlarge their entry process to allow individual submissions from filmmakers.
"The move is intended to encourage greater participation from all territories in Asia," said Shaw Soo-wei, executive director of AFA organizer the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society. "The open submission allows the Asian Film Awards to meet the growing demands from filmmakers all across Asia wishing to participate in the AFA."
Films can be submitted by filmmakers via the AFA Web site from now until November 30. The new route is in addition to submissions by the AFA jury and by the 12 official submission organizations, which mostly comprise national film administration bodies.
From the submitted films, the AFA will select up to six nominations in 13 categories of artistic achievement. Organizers are also considering creating a 14th category, for best costume design.
Nominations will be announced on Jan. 19, 2010, with the awards presented in Hong Kong on March 22, 2010, the beginning of the Entertainment Expo.
