The contribution comes from the estate of writer-director Nancy Malone.

The American Film Institute has received a $500,000 donation from the estate of filmmaker Nancy Malone.

The contribution will fund the newly created Nancy Malone Initiatives for Women Filmmakers, of which AFI alumna Tessa Blake has been named the director. The program's focus is the advancement and placement of female filmmakers that graduate from AFI conservatory and the institute's Directing Workshop for Women.

For the past two years, Blake led the female directors workshop, creating alliances with Universal, Lifetime and Fox.

"It was Nancy's lifelong wish that women storytellers be heard," said filmmaker Linda Hope of the Nancy Malone estate and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation. "The Nancy Malone Initiatives for Women Filmmakers ensure that her wish is realized."

Added AFI president Bob Gazzale: "This peerless gift in support of women storytellers will help to ensure America's art form echoes with equality for future generations."
