'Widows,' 'Destroyer', 'Mary Queen of Scots' Red Carpet Events Canceled Amid Wildfires

As Southern California continues to battle massive wildfires, Annapurna, Fox and Focus Features have canceled the AFI Fest red carpets for their upcoming films.

The carpets for Nicole Kidman's Destroyer, Viola Davis' Widows and the fest's closing night screening of Mary Queen of Scots have been canceled out of respect for those affected by the fires.

"After the tragic events of last week’s mass shooting and the continued wildfires across our beautiful state, we will be canceling tonight’s AFI FEST red carpet for Destroyer," Annapurna said Tuesday in a statement. "Annapurna along with the filmmakers, cast and crew of Destroyer express their deepest condolences to the victims and those who have been affected and are extremely grateful to all who have risked their lives in responding to both tragedies. If you are seeking ways to help support victims and our first responders, please see a list of wonderful organizations we too will be supporting." 

A Twentieth Century Fox film spokesperson said, "In light of the recent devastating events throughout California, Twentieth Century Fox has canceled its planned red carpet for Widows at AFI Fest," adding that "the studio will match the cost of its post-screening event with a donation to the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Disaster Relief Fund. Our hearts are with all those impacted, and our thanks go out to all the first responders working tirelessly to help everyone in need.”

“With the ongoing disasters and devastating wild fires in California, Focus, along with our filmmakers and cast, have chosen to cancel the red carpet at tomorrow’s premiere of Mary Queen of Scots,” said a spokesperson for Focus Features.

The screening for Destroyer still took place at the TCL Chinese in Hollywood, as will Wednesday and Thursday night screenings forWidows and Mary Queen of Scots, respectively.

These cancellations follow the scrapping of Sunday- and Monday-night AFI Fest red carpets for the Netflix titles The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Bird BoxAmid the fires, Paramount also canceled the Nov. 11 carpet and afterparty for the comedy Instant Family, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne. Late on Tuesday, Bravo canceled the red carpet for a screening of its upcoming series Dirty John "due to the tragic circumstances," a representative said in a statement.

The Woolsey Fire, which began Thursday afternoon, has burned 96,314 acres and destroyed more than 435 structures to date. The blaze, which is now said to be 35 percent contained, has forced the evacuation of 250,000 people and has been linked to two deaths.
