AFM: Download THR's Day 3 Daily

A look at the market's lack of a standout indie, exclusive news of Jesse Eisenberg's 'Resistance' in China and a chat with CJ Entertainment chief Jeong Tae-Sung.

The Hollywood Reporter has released its third daily issue for the American Film Market, which kicked off in Santa Monica on Wednesday. The issue features a look at the market's lack of a standout indie, exclusive news of Jesse Eisenberg's Resistance in China and a chat with CJ Entertainment chief Jeong Tae-Sung.

"There's Nothing For Us"
This year's market is particularly lacking on the mega, headline-generating, get-me-a-meeting-now front, in comparison to Klown, The Hitman's Bodyguard, Blade Runner 2049 and The Hateful Eight in previous years — and AFM attendees have noticed. THR takes a look at how the market that launches the indie tentpoles Twilight, The Hunger Games) that transform the industry is vastly different, leaving slim pickings for the big international players who used to rely on AFM for the flagship features to anchor their distribution slates.

CJ Entertainment's Ambitious Global Plans
CEO Jeong Tae-Sung recently revealed that the studio will produce more than 20 titles in 10 languages in the next three years. It also has 10 English-language original films under development for eventual release in North America and around the world. THR spoke with Jeong about what goes into CJ’s Midas touch for localized movies, what it will take for Netflix to gain traction in Korea and how to strategize for the growing China market when Beijing regulators hold all of the cards.

Resistance in China
Shanghai and Los Angeles-based Bliss Media has acquired Chinese distribution rights to Resistance, the biopic recounting the life of legendary mime Marcel Marceau and his involvement in the French resistance during World War II, THR has learned exclusively. Jesse Eisenberg will portray Marceau in the movie, written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz.
