AFM: 'Elizabeth' Helmer Shekhar Kapur to Direct Fantasy 'Tiger's Curse'
Lotus Entertainment will produce and introduce the film to foreign buyers at AFM
Shekhar Kapur, the Golden Globe-nominated helmer of Elizabeth and its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age, will direct the fantasy adventure Tiger's Curse for Lotus Entertainment and Ineffable Pictures.
The film is based on the first in a series of bestselling novels by Colleen Houck. They center on a teenage girl who, while working at a circus, encounters a white tiger named Ren whose true identity is a prince under a 300-year curse. They team up to unravel a prophecy that might be the key to breaking the curse.
The script is by Julie Plec, who co-developed The Vampire Diaries and created its spinoff The Originals, both on The CW.
Kapur will produce with Lotus's Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel and Ineffable's Raphael Kryszek and Jesse Israel. Lotus' D.J. Gugenheim and Ara Keshishian will executive produce. Lotus will introduce the film to foreign buyers starting at AFM.
Lotus' upcoming slate includes the sci-fi thriller Replicas, starring Keanu Reeves, which the production company will introduce to foreign buyers at AFM this year, the Dave Eggers adaptation A Hologram for the King with Tom Hanks, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Abigail Breslin zombie drama Maggie, the YA novel adaptation Fallen and the postapocalyptic Z for Zachariah.
Kapur was nominated for the best director Golden Globe for 1998's Elizabeth, which stars Cate Blanchett as the English queen. His other credits include the period drama The Four Feathers and a segment in the romance anthology New York, I Love You.
He is repped by CAA, Sentient and attorney Howard Frumes.
