British-based sales banner Altitude Film inks U.K., German-speaking Europe, Japan and Middle East territory deals for the New Zealand documentary box office success.

LONDON – The 3D Everest documentary Beyond The Edge is peaking global interest with U.K. banner Altitude Film Sales inking a slew of big territory deals.

The title has gone to Metrodome for the U.K., Polyband for German-speaking Europe, Kadokawa for Japan and Gulf for the Middle East.

FILM REVIEW: Beyond the Edge

The docudrama, made in New Zealand this year, charts the story of Sir Edmund Hillary’s monumental 1953 ascent of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Using a combination of archival footage and dramatic, newly shot 3D recreation, the film places the audience right at the heart of one of the greatest adventure stories of the 20th century.

The film made it's world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The title grossed $265,500 (NZ$320,170) on its opening weekend at the Kiwi box office across 76 screens, averaging a high per-screen average of $3,482 (NZ$4,200), toppling the previous documentary record holder for the territory, The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, also from Beyond the Edge filmmaker Leanne Pooley.

Altitude Film Sales is selling the title during the AFM.

The film is produced by Matthew Metcalfe (Dean Spanley) and is written and directed by Pooley.

The project was financed by the New Zealand Film Commission in association with NZ On Air’s Platinum Fund, TVNZ, Digifilm and Rialto Distribution.
